I really don't understand the connection between teaching braille and using ascii to transcribe it. A student learning Braille, blind or sighted, is going to learn it on a Perkins (or possibly using a slate and stylus). A person teaching Braille does have to know from memory the dots necessary to produce each symbol. Other than that, I don't find any problem using any transcribing method which produces correct results--typing, ascii Braille, or six-key entry.
