A macro can't be written globally for this because each messed up document
has its own problems. The common things like searching for multiple spaces
using a press of the spacebar can easily be put in a Word macro because it
is standard. Then you can run it without having to keep setting up your
search and replace options.
Another good thing to do is to highlight your entire document and strip out
character formatting (if this is something that needs doing) with control
spacebar. Another one is to select the entire document and apply your base
style such as "normal" which will at least give you a clean start if you
then want to apply your correct styles of choice.
But there really isn't a set macro that can be used globally. I just set up
common things if I know I might be using something a lot in a given project.
Not easy cleaning up other people's messes, huh? And they're not usually
even consistent in messing it up!
