Should jaws read contracted words speaking their ascii values or in real
English with the "not using contracted line for up and down" feature activated?
If that is the case, it is not working.

Hello Anne.
Using DBT with JAWS, you can tell JAWS not to try to use the translated line
when moving up or down in a braille document. To do that press Alt+U. It is a
toggle command; pressing Alt+U again would turn that feature back on.
Perhaps something is obscuring the translated line when this problem occurs.
You might try checking that out by turning on the JAWS cursor or by asking a
sighted colleague.
I also think it might help to Alt+Tab out of DBT and then back into it
Sincerely,

Is there a way to keep "translated line" from automatically turning on when I
down arrow in my braille document? Even if I uncheck it in the meu, when I
arrow line by line, it turns itself back on or jaws will say "turning on
translated line, translated line not available" then jaws speaks the
contractions as their computer braille equivalents, calling a period a 4 and
the like.
