New test: I have done exactly as you said.

No difference: 60 cells in my braille documents displayed on my braille line,
whereas embossing produces lines with 30 cells as I configured it!

Ready for new experimentation...

Christian:

Please do not put "ForceScreenSpacing" in the Display tree. Put it directly
in:

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Duxbury Systems, Inc.\DBT Beta

It will likely be the only value there. This is OK.

Well Peter:

In the "Display" tree, I created the "ForceScreenSpacing" key with the value
"0"
and cant' see any difference.

I attempted to modify the "BrailleDisplaySize" key in the "Font" entry and
set it to 0 instead of 12: no change.

Ready for new tests!

Hello Christian,

I see that I've given you rather bad directions. The name is
"ForceScreenSpacing".

Hi Peter:

I catched the location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Duxbury Systems, Inc.\DBT Beta

In the Tree, I select Display.
Then I create a Dword key with the value 0. But Which name must I give to
the key?

Christian:

You are correct that print font choices are more limited in DBT 10.5 than in
DBT 10.5. This is not due to anything changed or limited in Windows. It is
because we added to DBT the ability to see bold and italicized text
on-screen using bold and italicized versions of the fonts. This makes
documents more comforting to view after importing from a word processor.

However, some Windows fonts, when bolded, become wider. This is something
that DBT cannot handle well. So we disabled use of these fonts in DBT 10.5.

This conversation has helped me to remember something possibly very
important. DBT 10.5 does change the way that lines of text are drawn, even
in formatted view, in a very important way. DBT 10.5 normally draws lines
of text one character at a time, so that even if the user somehow manages to
select a font that becomes wider when made bold, there won't be a
substantial problem with the on-screen display when bold text is shown.
This change may be causing the problem with braille displays.

Perhaps you (or Christine) could try adding a registry value to the
following location:
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Duxbury Systems, Inc.\DBT Beta

To this location, add a DWORD value of 0. This will cause DBT 10.5 to
display text in formatted view using the same method as DBT 10.4 did. There
is still a significant change to the coded view. However, the registry
change may well give you greater flexibility about fonts in either view. If
so, I would be delighted to change the default behavior. We could make it
so that the new-style drawing is reserved for those presumably rare
instances where bolded text display is a problem.

Best Regards,

Peter

Hell Peter, Christine and all:

I confirm that on a braille display (with my configuration: Win98, Jaws
4.51, Handy-Tech Braile-Window 80 cells):

-- In print documents, either with formatted view or with coded view, all is
nearly correct with print font; but in formatted view I cannot precisely
control the number of blank spaces between words or at the beginning of a
paragraph. I attempted to modify the font and the size: the difference is
very clear with several sizes 18 or 24, for example). But I notice only one
blank space instead of 2 for each starting of paragraph.
I created a print document with [tab5], [tab10], [tab15] and so forth... and
wrote one digit at each tab: the best result was with Letter Gothic, size
18; but it was never quite exact; moreover this choice is a catastrophy in a
"normal" text because of extra spaces added between words: size 12 is the
less worse.

-- With DBT 10.4, I could see 8 fonts in Global / Fonts; with 10.5 I only
see "Courier new" and "Letter gothic". Windows must be responsible...

-- In Braille documents, both with formatted view or coded view, the print
font is the best solution.

* With formatted view and Braille/Simbraille font, my braille lines contain
more or less 50 characters -- whereas my embosser setup is set to 30; which
means that many extra spaces are added to reach these 50 signs...

* With coded view and Braille/Simbraille font, size 18 (the default one), I
can't read the end of my lines which are limitted up to 47-48 cells.

A chinise puzzle!

So: Ctrl+F5 in braille documents and DBT becomes our friend again...

All the best.

Christian, from Paris.

Christine:

Christian's proposed solution should work like a charm.

But I remain puzzled. DBT's coded view has changed quite radically from DBT
10.4 to DBT 10.5.

But the formatted view really hasn't changed. The code internally is
cleaner, but the calls made to Windows really should be the same. (Perhaps
I'm simply mistaken in this assertion; it is hard to argue against manifest
reality.) I do suspect that the default font size may have changed from DBT
10.4 to DBT 10.5.

So perhaps you can let me know whether the difficulty is with coded view
only, or is it also with formatted view?

In either case, Christian has been working with a braille display and DBT
10.5 for some time now. He's helped us to avoid much larger problems; to
his credit, what remains appears at least to have a workaround.

Hello Christine:

Yes, this phenomenon is known and is due to the new graphic interface of DBT
10.5.

The best solution for me is to select "Print font" in braille documents
(Ctrl+F5. To set this mode as the d'efault one, go to Global / Default view
and then tick the appropriate box.

If you find the same problem in print documents, go to Global / Fonts and
choose another font (on my PC, "Letter Gothic" is the better one).

Good luck!

DBT on my Braille display

Good morning,

Since downloading DBT10.5 I have noticed some strange behaviour with my
Braille display.

I am using a BrailleStar with JFW5.

I notice that often when I open a file and more so when I translate it to a
DXB file, the spaces between the words are not correctly shown. A space
character often takes up several braille cells. It is as if the character
is stretched and obviously this makes reading the file very difficult. As
far as I know, text on screen is ok and certainly when I move my cursor JFW
does not give any indication of anything being wrong.

Is anyone able to shed some light on this for me please?

Everything was correct in 10.4 and infact, still is. If I go back and load
10.4 nothing is wrong but if I then open 10.5 and open the same file, the
error is likely to occur.

Help and suggestions will be appreciated

Christine
