[drivingpairs] yokes, length of pole straps

I asked a question on another list:
> Just for a start, is it any advantage to use a yoke when your pole is sprung?
> It seems like it still might be an advantage, since when they are in
> breeching they would be pulling straight back and not to the side. I do have
> brakes, but on our steep hills I need the horses in breeching too, otherwise
> we just slide down.
And Jay answered (thanks Jay!) suggesting that this list would be the better
place to ask, and offering:
> If your pole straps are properly adjusted, and fastened to the collars
> correctly, there should be very little inward pull from the pole head (crab?)
> when braking. Do your breeching straps run under the belly to a false
> martingale, or do they tie in to the traces where they buckle in to the
> collar?

> Good luck with the pair. If you REALLY want a challenge, try a tandem!

I don't think so! Oh I know you guys love your tandems, but maybe that's
something that you have to start doing early in life to be really good - like
playing a musical instrument :) So far I haven't even got my pair going nicely
- just the usual, one works hard and one doesn't, strides are far from matched,
ones's gotten very afraid of big noisy trucks since our runaway last summer.
We're raising a baby who I hope will be a much better match with his mother...

My pole does have a crab, and my breeching straps tie in to the traces. I'll
try to send a picture showing the setup.
Any thoughts would be most welcome,
