Sorry , But the tying was to just attach the pole straps of each horse to
each other. That isn't any different then tying a horse to a pole to pull a
carriage that they are Tied to. It isn't a cruel thing to do. All it does
is help keep the horses together as you ground drive them.
As for a four in hand. Look at the leaders in the CDE photos they are also
tied together at the front in many cases especially on marathon.
