Hi Ansley
I have driven tandem with my sleigh for 8 years, and don't find it any
different than driving them to a carriage. I think the main reason is the
sleigh. I copied after one which my friend Jack Lyndon had built years ago
(we did an article in the Carriage Journal on the design) and the main thing
it has is height. You can't drive tandem properly (or safely) from a
regular cutter because you are sitting too low. You must be able to see
over the wheeler's head to watch your leader to anticipate any jigs or jogs
and that is hard to do if you are sitting in a cutter.
That being said, I find that some of my most enjoyable drives have been
with the tandem hitched to the sleigh. I am starting a new leader this year
and as »I did with the retired guy, I like to start them out on the sleigh.
It is so much easier to get them going properly and put on miles if you have
trails for them to follow as I am very fortunate to live adjacent to miles
and miles of forest trails that the skidoos pack down and give my young guy
a path to follow.
With a sunny day and my horn, what could be better than a tandem sleigh
ride.
