Way back when, I had more time and drove six days a week. I only had two mares
and drove them as a pair.
What I did to encourage them to stride alike is praise them a lot when they
were in step with each other. When they'd get out of step, I'd tell them,
'bad walk' several times and amazingly one of the mares, usually the older one,
would do a little number and get in step with her partner. To that, I'd tell
them 'good walk' or 'good trot' several times.
Usually a horse picks up on words you use frequently, like 'good' when they do
what they're asked. So I guess it carried over. It worked for me.
