[drivingpairs] starting tandems

Personally, I find pair driving of little or no help in driving tandem. The
equines involved need not work together at all in the tandem, so for me,
single driving is the key to tandem driving. Unless of course you can start
with the four, then the leader may already have the hang of going forward
without being in draft, which sometimes takes a bit of getting used to for
them.The rein handling is of course completely dissimilar to pairs or single
driving, and a pair is really like a bigger, slower reacting single anyway.
One fairly safe method of trying tandem is to ride the wheeler and drive the
leader, and I think there is much discussion on that subject in the

going tandem to play with.
