[drivingpairs] some people don't read

As the organizer of what has become a fairly large driving event here in
Texas, ( Cedar Creek Pleasure Driving Event), I can with some authority say
we take great pains to make the rules known prior to the event. They are
outlined in the prize list which goes out to all competitors a month before
the show. We are not currently ADS sanctioned, but in as much as we can, we
adhere to their general driving rules, (ie. warnings about removing
bridles, requirements to carry whips etc.) as well as the rules that
dictate how classes are run. Most especially such classes as Scurry cones,
Timed Cones, Gambler's Choice, etc.. Even the ADS allows some classes that
have house rules. but they must be specified as such, and the rules clearly
conveyed , which we do. So...... again these are all outlined in a prize
list, and when the specifics of a rule are too lengthy we refer the
competitor to the ADS handbook. Nevertheless, and there shall ever be,
those that aren't the least bit concerned about the rules as such, but fly
by the seat of their pants !! Truly scary sometime, but more often just
inconvenient. I love the driving community because of their all embracing
nurture of these "newbies"... I hear the veterans outside a class,
explaining things . No apron or hat ??? A quick dash to a trailer or two
and the new guy is on the rail. He/she just learned something too,
and most especially from watching those good veterans. That's what is
important, that we provide opportunities to learn. I don't know why there
are those that aren't aghast at looking like a goober. Why they haven't
picked up every driving publication, why they haven't joined every club,
attended every clinic, and had the same passion as many I know. But no
matter what we do, those individuals will always be there at a sanctioned
or unsanctioned show.
Now we have seriously bandied about getting ADS sanction, but do cringe
at the additional cost of a TD. Cedar Creek took in over $4000.00 but when
all the bills were paid we were $60.00 to the good. Not enough to pay and
transport another official right now .although as the show grows I feel
there is a real need for a TD.We do always get an ADS approved pleasure judge.
On a multiples note , since this is the pairs list, Tom O'Carroll chose
to make Cedar Creek the competitive debut for his lovely young team of
Cleveland Bay / TB crosses .They were a real treat to watch for competitor
and spectator alike. Tom won Concours d' Elegance, Gentleman to Drive, and
placed well in Reinsmanship to win the Multiples division. There was one
other multiple, Betty Lowe and her lovely VSE pair did a great job put to
their new Wagonette. We need more multiples !!!! So come on next year ! Ruthie
