This is merely an observation...
Chains give the whip the opportunity to adjust the length of the trace at the
vehicle/work end. Slot end or roller bolt traces give the opportunity to
adjust
the length of the trace at the collar or breastplate.
Much of this is practicality, some is tradition...along with the statement by
one old-timer that a gentleman never drives 6-up.
