[drivingpairs] Re: pairs without breeching and more...AND BRAKES

I'm not driving Hardy's horses or have his carriage. I tried his way and with
my set-up but I have to feather the brakes or I have a tendency to fish tail.
Perhaps my brakes are too strong. Feathering works for me and I watch the
traces and the drop from the saddle. My goal is for the traces to not go
completely slack and for the drop from the saddle to be perpendicular to the
ground. I think it depends on you equines as well as your individual carriage.
You have to experiment to see what works for you. I think the important thing
is what Hardy says, your goal is too only hold the carriage and keep your
horses from working so hard. Practice and find what works for you.

I use my brake to hold the carriage, but not the horses, and I use the brake
the entire way down the hill, so I ride the brake enough to hold the carriage,
so the horses don't have to hold it back at all, nor to having to pull it on
a downhill. Since this is so easy for me to do with my foot, why should my
horses have to do this work, that I can do so easily. Let them use their energy
to pull when I need them, plus to just balance themselves when we go downhill.
