It's been some years since I quit associating with the mini horse AMHA, but
at that time they REQUIRED overchecks and PROHIBITED sidechecks. They also
PROHIBITED liverpool bits. They required snaffles but did not require two
of them together. The AMHA is a BREED-RING entity and they want to
distinguish themselves from the ADS-type sport driving. Their rules more
closely follow those for Arab and Saddlebred shows. They also frown on
having breeching or thimbles on the harness, relying only on the saddle tugs
and hold-downs for braking the vehicle. This works OK as long as you're in
a sandy ring and a wire-wheeled cart. They also like to wrap the traces
around and around the shafts like stripes on candy. I suppose this must
take pressure off the breast -- the pony pulls the vehicle from his sides
instead of his front end. It seems to work, again as long as you're in a
sandy ring. It also keeps the trace from sagging since there is no
breeching for the trace to run through, and of course the swinging of the
saddle tugs back and forth would cause slack to come and go in the traces.
The first time I saw traces this way horrified me from a safety standpoint.
Imagine undoing a wreck with all that stuf twisted around!!!
