another novice, just chiming in to chat. on starting a new pair - well, my
first two started with one being very seasoned & reliable as single, and the
other quiet & steady as single. the first time putting them together to
ground drive, i had a header on the younger, with a lead rein. I had the
bonus of a quiet dirt road that both are familiar with, and we went for a
long slow walk, ground driving. That part was straight forward enough -
probably because both were so quiet anyway. I did not have a lot of fun
trying to ground drive them in circles or getting them to respond together
well, while ground driving. I think i am just not coordinated enoudgh to run
& steer at t he same time ; we went to hitched as pair very quickly. the
carriage steadied all of us!
I know people often start the very green, in pair with a more experienced
horse, & in that case, I am not sure that you would want to go to the
carriage so quickly, as that might be one more issue for a young horse...
just my one starting experience, thus far, I am sure some of the much more
knowledgable will have some other views for you. Nancy in NH
