Dave, my thought is that steel, or metal of any kind, would be too heavy. I
made
mine from hardwood dowel stock (closet rod) and I have seen them made from ax
handles. Getting the length right for a 'standard" bar set would seem to be an
issue. They need to be narrow enough so as not to interfere with the shafts,
but
wide enough to clear the leaders butt. I thought about a longer bar for the
leader and shorter for the wheeler, but after trying that out with a test set of
sticks, it did not seem to work as well as equal length.
Note that in Mary Ruth Marks' handbook on Tandem Driving, there is a good
illustration of the bars she uses. I just sent a link to my album at Picture
