[drivingpairs] Re: jeanine's pair set-up

Hi Hardy,

Thanks for the feedback. You know I tried the martingale from the collar
originally and didn't like it. Maybe this is because my hookup is so close
from neck yoke to collar, but when backing for instance, the neck collar
would be activated first and then the britchen. I didn't want all that
pressure on the back of their necks. So I moved the martingale attachment
forward to the neck yoke (like a draft harness hookup) and this caused the
britchen to activate first and then the collar to support. This seems to
help give me smooth, fairly consistent backups since they can squat in and
use the britchen to push the carriage back. It seems to work for us anyway.

Thank you,

Jeanine

All sounds fine to me, but perhaps you can save one step and don't need to
unhook the martingale snapshackle from the kidney link and snap it to the
yoke. That's the way draft horses have their set up - and there it is
perhaps necessary for heavier loads. But for carriage driving (e.g. lighter
carriages) we usually keep the false martingale attached to the collar.
Just a suggestion to make life easier.
