[drivingpairs] Re: hay, weather, pairs

With 14 hungry pony and horse mouths to feed of my own, and several more
boarders, the price of hay is always an issue. I usually pay between
$125-$150 per ton (delivered, but not stacked in the barn) for top quality
oat hay.

Now about the weather... :-) I spent the whole day at the barn, taught 6
lessons, drove two ponies and a horse, and rode a pony for the second time
in his young life. The day was clear, bright and calm, with a high of 62
degrees. Life is good in the high desert this time of year! Now, I'll
start whining about the heat sometime in May and will get downright
depressed, when the temps jump up over 110 sometime in June and stay there
until sometime in Sept. Even though our day time temps are nice and balmy,
we get hard freezes most nights between Nov and Mar -- enough to kill the
bugs, and in the summer, the humidity is so low (usually around 5%) that
there are not many bugs then either.

On the pair driving side. My first pair did not work out well... I think
I've finally decided that for whatever reason, Ruger and Ripcord don't work
well together. I have not been able to get them together since the mess we
made of the Arizona CDE -- walk? what is walk?. Will be competing with
Ruger single again this year while Rimfire, Ruger's full brother, grows up a
little and can take Ripcord's place next to Ruger. So far things are
looking up with those two. Rimfire shares Ruger's easy going personality,
and they already get along better in the stall and turnout than Ruger and
Ripcord did. Rimfire (who is 3) is learning his lessons so quickly and so
willingly, I think Ruger must be coaching him at night! Should have Rimfire
hitched single for the first time, sometime next weak and will put him
together with Ruger after the Arizona CDE in March. I sure miss driving a
pair, and am hoping that my second attempt is more successful than my first.

Stay warm and dry,
Merrie Morgan Stevens

Hay prices become a lot more important when youm have more than one to
feed, doesn't it.
