Margaret,
If you don't have a pair of ground driving lines, you can make your own. You
can use some nice and soft, round nylon rope. I try and pick a size that fits
comfortably in my hands. Then use a small snap on the end. Don't tie a
knot, it'll be too big. Loop it through the snap and then either sew it or
wrap some strong thread around and around to hold it in place.
If you don't have a harness saddle, or a lunging surscingle, you can also use a
saddle. Thread the lines through the stirrups.
Susan is right. Teach the voice commands first. If you have no one to help
you start the ground driving, you can teach the commands on a lead rope walking
beside the horse. Teaching the horse to back is easily done that way too.
Don't forget Whoa! Most important command of all. Good luck and keep us
posted.
