Yes, I love the riding together and ponying concept and do so also when
putting two pairs together as four. I ride one and pony the other and my wife
rides one and ponies another, so we each have one pair, and then we bring them
closer together into posistion as in the four, to make sure they are all
comfortable with each other close together and in front and behind wth no
kicking nor
biting. I am fine also with all the other suggestions in the post, except I am
not too fond of jockey sticks. I think they can be a bit harsh on the horses.
With properly adjusted pair reins and just driving them FORWARD and keeping
them on the bit, I find that I don't need the jockey stick, and usually don't
need the rump rope either. When we stand with young horses, I try to have
headers, and when we move off, we go FORWARD so there is not much chance that
they
can spread apart and face each other. But rather than starting with two green
youngsters together, I also try to only start one youngster and put him with
and old schoolmaster. So that makes the process also a lot easier and more
secure.
Hardy (great discussion and I loved Diane's post)
