My approach is as follows --- doesn't make it right just one way to do things.
First I drive them as singles so they understand what is being asked of them.
I longline drive the various dressage patterns (circles, laterals etc.) so they
are balanced and flexible.
As a pair I drive in a quite area so they can pay attention to me. I will
switch sides at least once a week so they do not become settled on a
particlular side. This keeps them 'sharp' and listening to me and responding
to each request. It also makes them aware of their partner where it is and how
to work with the other horse rather than rely on them for directrion.
I have tried other approaches but none seem to give me the 'partners' that I
want.

Interesting to hear the different thoughts on how to go about placing the
horses in a pair. My boys, I have been told, were being driven with the
older horse on the left, with the younger on the right........because they
were going better this way than in the reverse positions, where they had
originally been placed.
What is the logic to switching sides on a somewhat regular basis? How do
you know when it is time to leave them in specific positions?
