Dan,
Let's KIS. A drop pole is a pole that will drop to the ground when you let go
of it. Nothing holds it up if it's not attached to the collar or breast
collar. Don't know what a 'shock pole with evener' is. I thought an evener
had to do with the singletrees, but then, I'm no expert. I have a Puddle
Jumper (PJ) and it has a 'shock' that holds up the pole. Makes it lighter for
the horses....and it won't drop to the ground. Most of the newer carriages
use something similar to hold up the pole. Basically, the horses don't have
to carry the weight of the pole in addition to pulling. I like it better and
they probably do too, but I've never asked them.
As many manufactures of carriages there are, that's probably how many
variations of poles and pole assemblies there are. The PJ has a pole
assembly, which needs to be removed to put on the assembly that holds the
shafts. That way I can use it to drive a pair or drive a single. Usually,
the carriages come equipped with shafts and the pole is extra, when you buy it
new. There are so many choices out there now, it boggles the mind.
You're located in an area where there are many places you could go to look at
carriages.....like CDEs, pleasure shows, and even close enough to a Martin's
sale. Good luck. We're rootin' for ya'.
