Hi Cindy,
While i can understand your feelings for this situation and while you
may have had good experiences with lay people floating your horse's
teeth, there are other situations that veterinarians see that would
shock you, like broken jaws, tongue lacerations, cracked teeth,
severed palentine arteries, and most commonly nerve damage to the
tongue because without sedation, most lay dentists use it as a
handle. Also....think of how dangerous it is for the people standing
around to have a horse with a huge metal speculum on its
mouth....ever get whacked in the head with that ? What they are
doing in Canada as they have done in many states is to make dentistry
a veterinary procedure. Veterinarians are regulated by the state and
nationally and have standard level of practice that they must adhere
to to have a licence to practice just like your human dentist does
and has to attend at least 20 hours of continuing education per year.
This is all done for your horses and your saftey and to give you
better service from trained professionals.
gone are the days when you could ask your farrier to take off your
horses sharp edges...there is a lot more to dentistry than that.
