Good job, and good to ask the question: You are fine to shorten the pole as
long as you make sure that the horses don't have to hold the vehicle back from
the shortened pole (nor have to back it). So if you use your brake to hold the
vehicle, then you are ok. Long term, get a yoke in front, and that takes care
of the problem too.
