We don't use any fixed cheek bits because if there is
any pull on one side, the whole bit can twist in the
jaw. Not as able to be light on the reins with our
horses, single or multiples with coupling reins. I
don't ride in fixed cheek bits anymore either, less
usable to me now in getting collection of body or
flexiblity of the neck area. Maybe Dana knows some
tricks we don't!

What we do with the Liverpools swivel or flexible
sides, is to put the rubber bit guards on them. The
rubber is a cushion, softens the side if it should
turn in on the horse lip. Not getting a real pinch.
Guards also prevent any possible pinch between curb
chain and bit side on the lip area by covering it up.
Chain curb goes across the bit guard not skin.

All our bits have the rubber bit guards to keep horses
comfortable, ridden or driven. I heat my bit gurards
in hot water before stretching over bit sides, makes
them more elastic. With Pair bits, slobber bars
below, I cut the bit guard to go on mouthpiece, then
sew a couple loops with string to put cut edges back
together evenly. Use string the same color of guard,
never shows.

Bit guards last quite a while, but should be changed
for new if they start cracking around the mouthpiece.
Cracked area might sore the horse lips, so I just put
on new ones. Bit guards are fairly inexpensive.

Just an idea for consideration.
