[drivingpairs] Re: drivingpairs Digest V3 #10

OK...here goes...
Pairs to a cart.......can be done and done well. We drove a pair to a very
well made Meadowbrook-type cart that had a wide track and converted from single
to pair for many years. ..until ADS outlawed them in competition.

Concerning the balance problem...when Al and I first started driving pairs in
1989, we cliniced with Richard Nicoll. He was sceptical of the vehicle...he
even tried to tip up the pole by standing and bouncing up and down on the
back...pole moved up about 4"". The rest of the CDE clinicians came over and
were
imporessed with the vehicle. Then he got in a drove it.....impressed him as
well as the other clinicians, even asking who made it...Schwockert in
Wisconsin.
We never had a tipping problem...won a lot of obstacle classes with that rig,
and real easy to do back up obstacles with. We never have had a tipping
problem with this particular vehicle, and we have done CDEs with a pair with
it....and won. This vehicle has great balance and a light pole end weight.

As for dropping the yoke off of the pole...Barry Dickinson showed us how to
rig a safety strap on all of our pair vehicles, two and four wheel. Plus our
work harness has safety straps from the collars to the yoke to keep it all
together. We drove this rig in competitions with no complaints from the
officials......there are junk, and unbalanced pole tip heavy vehicles with four
wheels
out there being used all of the time.

Please see the cover of the BDS driving book....four in hand to a
cart...recommended for training.
