[drivingpairs] Re: drivingpairs Digest V2 #264

My new farrier - the one I picked up at the corner store while out for a drive
(gee I guess I COULD tell the whole story, it isn't the CD-L after all <WEG>)
reminded me of the snow balls that can form on the shod foot. So for me it's a
choice between the possibility of a broken leg caused by the combination of
pony on stilts and frozen pockmarked mud, and extending the driving season by
leaving the shoes on...and perhaps eliminating the possibility of having
totally cracked up wet feet like we saw last spring when the feet were just
cracking off right and left and we couldn't get the shoes back on until summer.
The best farrier I ever knew got really pissed off if you pulled the shoes -
he said he worked hard to get the feet the right shape. Now he is a
tempermental guy and I don't know if he was right, or just that it worked right
for him, or if it was really the money (a lot of farriers must starve in the
winter) but he won't even bother with a waiting list he's so busy.

My ponies were bewildered that I didn't drive them today. Gosh was it ever
nice but I had no help today and I had to get the paddock picked - it had been
waaay too long. Any advice for the person breaking a pony single that has only
been in a pair? I'm going to pack it in for the winter- take the harnesses to
Yonni to have the saddles redone so they don't sag backwards etc., and drop off
the wagonette to have the brakes adjusted and the fifth wheel checked, and I'm
hoping to get them broken single now. Who knows, I may do tandem someday- but
gotta get life insurance first. I started refreshing the ground work today but
neither of them would do anything WRONG. I had to take them out of the mud
paddock to do this, and neither of them would cross me for fear of losing their
reward of nibbling grass in the yard after their session. Too funny. They
even tolerated the screaming kids playing bareback leadline.

because we can't have more days like that in the winter - you know the ones
warm enough for preschoolers to play outside while you train the ponies?

Subject: [drivingpairs] Last Drive of the Season?

I'm sorry now that the farrier will be here on Wednesday to remove their
shoes for the winter. In fact, I'm having the shoes taken off because someone,
somewhere told me that it's best for the hooves to have a month or two to
"relax". But MY toenails don't seem to need "relaxation time." Can anyone tell
me
the down side of leaving shoes on year-round? We just might have more winter
driving time.

Thanks for any advice.....
