I will sound off on this one. In a turnout class, you might get dinged for
different bits, all other things being equal, but in CD, there should be no
penalty. Not that there should be in Pleasure driving either, but a
traditionalist judge might be effected by mixing bits. On the subject of
matching metals, I would caution all against using brass bits for anything. No
educated judge should ever mark you down or critisize you for using stainless
steel bits with brass harness. The same goes for stainless tongues on brass
buckles. I have heard people advise that the bit should be brass if the harness
is brass and that, IMPO, is an absurd and dangerous suggestion. I believe brass
bits to be a fad created by ignorance, and NOT based on tradition or function.
