[drivingpairs] another questions about britching and saddles...

hi everyone,

i have been looking at another way to harness as well... why don't we
in the pleasure/cde discipline use the "no crupper" harness used with
britching that the draft people use all the time. it is called
spider britching. it combines the best of both worlds in my
opinion...the britching never moves yet there is no crupper. from
what i have read the only reason to use a crupper is when you are in
the breed ring and need to have an anchor for an overcheck. if you
ever have looked at the harness set-up for a pack string in the
mountains [up and down hills] they never use cruppers either but
ALWAYS have britching.

i have used a spider britching on john henry for years on his
training harness. i had camptown make me a spider backband into
which i buckled my zilco britching. jh was wearing this set-up when
we were hit by the car and the britching not only didn't break but
must have pushed jh and kept him from injury. the entire harness
held and both shafts broke near the dash on my road cart. i credit
the harness staying together and in place with our survival.

i have also wondered why pair harnesses in our disciplines always
have a very conforming saddle when all they actually need is a
backpad or surcingle that holds terrets. this is particularly
interests me because the only harness saddles that fit the mules are
custom made treeless saddles - i have 2 for single driving but none
for the pair harness - i know because john henry has silver dollar
sized white spots on his back from other driving saddles.

inquiring minds need to know....
