I would do more pair work than single (but then, I'm a pairs driver so am
precudice), but in the pair, you can make the older horse do almost ALL the
work,
and the youngster just goes along, and doesn't need to do any pulling, which
in single he has to do. But in the pair, make his traces a hole longer and
his rains a hole shorter, and then he just coasts along, doesn't need to pull,
but learns everything else, PLUS horses are herd animals, they like to be
together, much less scary out there to be in a pair than as a single. I am used
to
starting all youngsters in the pair, rather than single. The only downside
with this could be, that you need to know how to drive pairs, but once you do,
then I think it's much easier, safer, and better for the youngster. If
necessary, take some pairs lessons from somebody who is good with pairs and
knows his
stuff there. (No evener! Starting out go FORWARD to get out of any possible
seesaw, if they start unever, so don;t hold back, but go forward. Make large
wide turns, in turns make the inside horse pull, even if it's the youngster,
that
way you get proper bending from the start, have your coupling reins adjusted
properly, make them travel straight, use the whip on the outside, be calm,
etc)
