<PRE>on some antique carriages there was a spring that went from the pole to a 
sturdy part of the floor board or the axle You will need a couple of eye 
bolts and a sturdy spring like a short garage spring I've seen them in bigger 
hardware stores or you can contact carriage machine shop in Bird in Hand Pa 
they use a similar set up on their flyer and eagle carriage to hold the pole
