[drivingpairs] When to start?

I bred my wonderful driving mare in hopes that I could get a better
match for her than I have now. Her "baby" Greni was born June 2004.
Usually Icelandics are not started under saddle until they are four, and
then only lightly. Real work doesn't start until five. I'm guessing
that it's not because they "mature late", but because they are ponies
who are ridden by adults. In the past I've started driving ground work
at 3, and hitched for light work at four. Would you say that aiming at
pair status for him would change anything in that schedule? Should I
take him out to trot beside her?
