This is my first message to the Pairs list. Usually post to CD-L or privately
to subscribers.
My pairs carriage is only 6 months old and is a fabulous ride for me, groom and
most importantly the ponies. It weighs 230kg and the ponies are 11.3hh.
Yes they are small for such a weight however I know I must have the ponies very
fit for an event and that is the trade-off for having such a lovely vehicle.
Love the delayed steering too but have yet to learn just how tightly I can turn
in competition. Ponies can do it - just me that is problem. Mind you they are
after all, Section A Welshies!!
The vehicle manufacturer, Trevor Leibowitz (formerly of South Africa) who
learned his trade with a European carriage builder, will only build to FEI
weights. His reason? Safety, and he figures if the weights recommended by the
FEI are for the benefit of horses/ponies and drivers then that is what he will
do. Some of his would-be clients want a vehicle that will suit a single pony
and a pony pair. They want a vehicle that weighs 150-160kg for a 14hh pony
pair.
