I am a relative "newbie" to this List, but not to horses and their training,
having ridden for the past 61 years, and trained my own for the past 49 or
so....You have received several very knowledgable and thoughtful opinions. I
agree that there are horses that just probably should go on to do something
else, and that if you can't/don't feel completely confident in the horse,
especially after the time you have put into attempting to "rehabilitate" him
after the initial incident, then you perhaps shouldn't keep trying. Your
safety is paramount(and of course, that of others, too).
I also think there are horses who just develop a 'mindset' about reacting in
a certain way to certain stimuli-whether such reaction seems 'reasonable'or
not, to us-and this can be very difficult, if not virtually impossible, to
overcome-or at least, without devoting an inordinate amount of time to trying.
Indeed, there ARE 'lots' of good horses out there, who may be ready and willing
to accept the training and have a great 'work ethic'! I cannot prove it, of
course, but my personal opinion is that there are horses who 'find an excuse',
and then use it.....
Best wishes, and safe driving,
Margo Cox-Townsend, in amazingly COOL central New Mexico(we seem to have been
sent someone else's June weather....!)
