Well, I have recently been able to hook up a "new" pair and try them out
together. They are full brothers that I bred/raised; ages 10 and 8-a bay and a
silver roaned sabino(?!). Both are now seasoned singles, the younger had never
been in a pair, and I wanted to see if I thought he would be suitable-his older
brother is solid as a ROCK, and I do have another bay that pairs pretty nicely
with him. I have a team pole for my Frontier easy entry(these are MINIS,
BTW)--it is NOT an ideal vehicle, but is OK for short training sessions, and
keeps me from having to use my "good" vehicles simply for training purposes. It
went OK, but the "jury is still out"; not sure that the younger horse will be
safe enough. He has always been"goosey",tends to startle easily-and clearly
wasn't always comfortable with the pole. We will concentrate on basics, take it
very easy, see how it goes. I needed to see if I should keep or sell the other
bay, a multitalented little horse who I really use only in the pair-he is
leased to a friend this year; she is using him in everything from Showmanship
to Halter Obstacle to Hunter/Jumper. Looks at this point like I should keep
him; though he is NOT a halter horse, he has LOTS of talent and training that
it would take years to replicate- just wish he were 1 1/2" taller(he's 32", his
pair mate is 34")! Our lease agreement allows me to use Teddy on occasion in
the pair-as in parades and other public occasions. I really enjoy driving the
pair; look forward to more!
I may need some advice on using a pair harness with collars; am going to look
at one this weekend. I do know that fit of the collars is crucial, and I will
be able to bring this(lightly used)harness home to try on my guys. Any tips on
determining if fit is proper, whether all of the parts are there, etc.? I have
never used full collars, only breast collar harness. Will post when I have it
here...it, I think, is beta or biothane-don't know the maker.
Sorry to ramble on so...just love having a place to talk about what I love to
do!!
Best wishes to all,
Margo Cox-Townsend
