[drivingpairs] Re: The Ideal Pairs Trailer

After loading our carriage into the back of the pickup and the two horses
into the small bumper-pull trailer for many years, we decided to take the
plunge
and get a gooseneck. Most of the driving we do is recreational although we
seem to use the trailer quite frequently and get fairly far away from home at
times. I was truly paranoid about driving a large trailer so we went as small
as possible to make the transition thinking that we could make a change later
if necessary. Also there was some question about overtaxing our 3/4 ton pickup
or its transmission or something like that. Anyway, in June we purchased a
very nice used 17' aluminum trailer with 5' side ramp, back ramp and no
dressing room. As of last week we've been talking about replacing it with a
19'
trailer. The interior is pretty empty. There is a box stall in the front
which
we use for our carriage. We load the carriage from the side ramp and it fits
crosswise in the trailer. The two horses load into straight stalls from the
rear. There seems to be plenty of room in the gooseneck for all of our STUFF.
Last weekend we wanted to take the horses and one of our larger pleasure
vehicles to an event about 10 miles from home. This carriage would NOT fit
sideways and even with the dashboard removed it really was closer to the horses
than
we felt comfortable with. A trailer just two feet longer would have been
perfect. Actually driving the 17' trailer for the past two months has given me
confidence that 19' won't be much different. We have noticed one pitfall of
having the horses and carriage in the same compartment. The carriage can get
dirty. This last time we covered the carriage and it came out of the trailer
nice and clean. Well, for our situation we think we've got things figured out
but this discussion is great so maybe we'll have some other ideas to include
before we go looking for a new trailer next year.
