Hi Noel,
LOL!!! Leave ME to do the hard stuff. What the three letters, RSS,
stand for is Really Simple Syndication.
How does it work? A website or blog publishes new information. So
how do the interested people know about this new information other than
constantly visiting the website/blog and looking? Most major websites/blogs
have to have a RSS feed (get it going Noel!). All of the big news service
and popular blogs have it from CNN to BBC.
Using what us technology idiots call an 'aggregator' (I use
www.bloglines.com which is free), you set up 'subscriptions' to a bunch of
useful websites/blogs that you want to keep on top of. All of the updates
are automatically listed on my bloglines account. I can see the latest and
greatest from National Geographic, Discovery Channel and my computer whiz
stuff by clicking on ONE hyperlink on my desktop. IT is NO different than
clicking on your hyperlink to get your email BUT it is totally organized by
MY subject interests and totally searchable (Yahoo groups for example, has
trouble with searching).
For me, it is hugely better. I don't have a mass of things in my
inbox to click on and delete. I subscribe to 7, yes, 7 lists at home.
Sometimes I come home from school and I have 192 emails in the inbox! I
have to wade through them and delete all the cute little emails that are ONE
liners saying "SO cute." OR "Nice picture." to be able to find the one THAT
really needed to be answered or discussed. Sometimes lists take on a tone I
don't really like and I just delete ALL emails that has a subject heading
(people don't seem to like to change subject headings). This is a waste of
my time. Yes, the driving pairs list is not really like this but some are.
Personally, I am tired of people saying 'search the archives'. It
is nearly impossible to do on many lists. SO what do I do? I end up
keeping the email for future reference in Outlook that I KNOW I can search.
I get pretty daunted when I look and see I have 4,000 emails in my inbox!!!
Yes, I am a pack rat.
SO, I am totally behind Noel. I want to make my life simple. I want
ALL the marvelous information and knowledge that the Internet can offer us
in the quickest and searchable way I can. I don't want to miss out on a
single thing!
IF you need help setting up an aggregator such as bloglines, I am
there for you. It is very easy to do. Remember it is only one click away
JUST like your email. It is just another mindset and definitely NOT far
different from email. I remember when people couldn't even email <VBG> and
I had to call them on the phone! Noel, get the feed working <VBG>.
Yours from a person that wants a 'svelte' inbox but still wants to be
'informed',
Claudia Novak
