Hi Dana,
I have a similar problem. I have a standardbred that drives
single. However, I would like to get another sort of matching animal
and drive them as a pair. I am working right now on a pole that I can
attach to a jump seat buggy that I have. However, there are several
options. The first that came to mind was using the existing horse that
I have as part of a pair. Another is obviously to get a trained pair.
That could prove expensive. Besides I may well be buying someone else's
headache. A third option is to get a pair locally and either have them
trained or try to train them myself. The local animals are most likely
to be quarter horses or mules. My ultimate goal is to hitch to a
stagecoach that I purchased recently and I will need a fairly
substantial pair of animals. Your scenario is probably the least
expensive. After reading several posts to this list and on the CD-L
list, the one thing that stands out is that I believe money spent on
some professional help will be money well spent.
Thanks,
Lynn from Sedan

Hi Lynn from Sedan,
This is Dana from Arizona. I don't know how intelligent this answer
is,
but this is what I did and have had success. I bought a 4 year old
Haflinger that was broke to drive from the Missouri Haflinger sale.
She
was broke to a cart and only knew one speed, trot fast straight ahead.
I
have had her a year and have progressed to being first in dressage and
marathon at the Arizona CDE. I purchased a 2 year old haflinger last
fall
with the intentions of pairing her up with my now 5 year old.
Not all of us have the bank roll to search and buy perfect pairs. I
am having fun and that to me is what counts.
Dana from Arizona
