Hi Ansley,
I checked with the "Driver" in this outfit, and he
said the adjustments are about 1 to 3. Tandem leaders
take about 1/3 less, the rein amount taken up
(directional signal) that Team leaders do.
He said for a turn in the corner, also about the same
rein adjustment needed for about a 20 meter circle, he
would change rein for Tandem leader about 1 1/2
INCHES. Same turn with the team of four, would need
about an 8 inch loop for his leaders. Smaller horses
might take an even smaller adjustment.
Comparable perhaps to the tightness in steering
sports cars and power steering on the large luxury
cars? Takes a lot more steering wheel turning, to get
the luxury model around the corner than the sports car
needs.
An good, forward, experienced Tandem leader, can
FEEL what you want, almost by just how you are
gripping the reins. Then as driver and horses work
together, they connect, get very familiar with each
other over time. Sometimes, a literal squeeze of the
rein, will be as much aid as the horse needs, for
starting his manuever. He will react that quickly!!
Can be good or not so good! You the driver, need to
be ready for such quick reactions. Probably why Jay
has NO cholesterol, racing blood, keeps it from
settling!!
So when I say twitch of rein, that is a very SMALL
twitch or movement of the rein, to give a direction to
the Tandem leader. Tandems are just a unique way to
use horses, every thing goes quickly.
Glad the information is helpful.
