[drivingpairs] Re: Tandem hooking up



I harness both horses tied side by side to the trailer or in the cross ties.
I hook up the wheeler just like a single horse and then back her into
position behind the leader. You could certainly back her up first and then
hook the cart. My way, he (the leader) is still tied and I have her (the
wheeler's) reins in my hand. I then run his reins through her bridle and
saddle so now I'm holding both horses' reins. 
Then we hook his traces to hers, my helper unties the leader and holds him
while I get into the cart, then my helper walks beside the leader for the
first few steps until we get straightened out. Then she unsnaps his lead
rope from his halter and we're off. 
Not sure if it's 'correct' but it works for us and seems to be safe. I
should mention that they're VSEs so everything is a little more
manoeuvrable.
