[drivingpairs] Tandem Bars

    I just got back from vacation, and am trying to catch up on posts. I
have used both, long traces and tandem bars, and I like both systems. Some
horses get too much swing/sway going with the bars and the wheeler seems to
object to getting beaten about the head and neck. Like most of us, I made
mine, and I patterned them after traditional bars as far as dimensions. I
used a pair of old hungarian style swingle bars, with a leather strap
connecting them, then added a strap back from the center of the wheeler's
bar to the center of the collar/breastplate, plus two short trace pieces
from the wheeler's bar back to the tandem keys on the wheelers collar. The
leaders bar I had two short nylon straps with a stainless "D" at one end and
a slot in the other made up to fit around the Hungarian style bar, then
fitted a quick release into the slot, after looping the strap around and
through the "D" like a loop trace. Either way, bars or long traces, I have
always used keys, unless the buckle on the wheeler collar has had one built
in.
