[drivingpairs] Quick Release or Carabiner

First - Thanks Helen for forwarding my original post. I sent it from my
spousal unit's (Linda) computer and forgot to change to sent from. I tried
to send you an e-mail to your sunshinefarm e-mail but it was returned as
undeliverable.

Olive,

If you go to this link, and on to the Miracle Farm album, the photo listed
as portrait is a good picture of how we connect to the pole.

I got a case of dyslexic and switched how we connect. We actually hook the
carabiner to the pole head and connect the quick release to the breast
collar. Sorry for the mistake. This setup is on a marathon vehicle with a
sprung pole. I would not use this setup with a drop pole, as Don Hayes
mentioned, you should be using a yoke with a drop pole. The carabiner that
we use is from REI, an Omega Pacific (I think), and does have a twist lock
to prevent accidental opening. And well I agree with Kathy Robertson that
high quality quick releases are better I could not find a combination that
satisfied me (too many moving parts). As far as interference goes, the
ponies actually hug the pole in most cases so interference is not usually a
problem.

We have quick release snaps for the traces as well. The quick release snaps
make hitching and unhitching fairly simple. Treat the quick release snaps
like you do your harness, regular cleaning, inspecting and replacing when
worn or damaged, and they will perform as designed. Ignore them and they
will fail when you need them the most (Murphy's Law).
