Greetings, all!
Regarding Poplar Forest, Virginia: My husband's
parents live very near there, and before we got
married (fall of 1981), we hauled an old man's little
pony -- eventually to become my first own pony -- from
the center of Lynchburg out to Forest, and drove that
pony over to Poplar Forest and all around the grounds.
I think the place was open to the public at the time,
but it has since been sold privately, I believe. I
think they open it on special occasions.
So I took a little spunky pony in a wire wheeled cart
all around that place! How about that! What a
memory. Didn't know diddly about what I was doing or
how to drive. I shudder to think how dangerous I was!
I had "resorted" to messing with the little pony
because the TB hunter I used to borrow had been sold.
That spunky little pony got me started in ponies.
He had been a rescue case as a foal and had been
adopted out and brought back from starvation. And
then foundered. I had him for several years. By the
time he was 10, he had arthritis in his knees and you
could feel and hear the bones grinding against
themselves. We donated him to Virginia Tech's vet
school -- one of their first donated horses. So he
served to help train veterinarians, and met a humane
end that way.
It's a viable alternative, by the way, and you know
that your horse will not go to slaughter or be abused.
We are both alumni of Virginia Tech. (Not the vet
school though.)

They're hanging from the cage door, waiting to be fed."

prose style, to love the surface of the earth, and to take a pleasure in solid
objects and scraps of useless information." -- George Orwell, 1947
