I am adding a little here in the pole converstation.
The long pole for cariages, allows horse leverage to
control vehicle. Modern vehicles with a yoke and
spring loaded pole, will need different lengths than
old carriages with fixed or drop poles. Yoke allows
much closer horse hitching than fixed poles or poles
with a pole head on it. Length will change how pole
strap pulls pony on the chest. Long pole makes for a
straight-ahead pull, almost straight forward pole
strap, same sort of pull is caused with a yoke. Short
pole with pole head, makes for a very sideways pull.
Next question for pair, "Is the evener tied down?"
Until horses/ponies can walk off smoothly TOGETHER,
you don't want the evener working. One animal a step
or two behind is NOT together. Working evener makes
the animals work against each other, jerking at
starts. More work as a single, is never time wasted.
I think a thickly padded, over 1 1/2", wood piece,
saplings, to drag, is better than a PVC pipe. I
really don't like plastic, it breaks too much easily.
Echos as they move around, giving a secondary effect
to your directions. Wood is stronger, saplings are
bendy when stepped on and often free in the fenceline.
I do like the padding idea, but make it thick.
The pool noodles, pipe insulation are very good ideas
as padding, light, thick, bendy, inexpensive.
