Wish Hardy were here because he would have the answer. The writer did say
it was the old horse pulling and the youngster hanging back. I seem to
recall Hardy saying to lengthen the traces on the young horse so it doesn't
have to pull as much. Then shorten the reins on the young horse so you have
control.
In this case, I can see that lengthening the traces would encourage the
youngster to step into the breastcollar, which it needs to learn how to do
in order to pull.
