Hi all,
I don't know if my original intro ever got to the old list so here goes
again. I am a young at heart (or crazy) senior and mostly rode until about 10
years ago. I had a MorganX that hated riding so we took up driving - which
he loves. Then I was given an Arab who still isn't sure about driving but
likes riding...so no longed for pair yet.
Then last August my husband Tom and I bought a pair of half brother
Haflingers aged 2 and 3 years old. (Yes, crazy) They are both gentle and
ride and ground drive fairly well but are definitely still babies (teething)
with typical teenage behavior. They had been bitted far too severly (in my
opinion) so I am working on getting to a milder setting on the bits -and
having great success so far in an arena -haven't tested them out and about
yet. We have been riding in mullen mouth pelhams using the curb rein VERY
lightly(really not at all-just there if we do need it). We ride close and
bumping side by side, switch sides, and separate to different ends of the
arena with no problems. I ground drive them single with mullen mouth
butterflys and liverpools on the smooth cheek setting in both open and closed
bridles and they behave very well. They both seem very willing to work and
learn. All of our sessions are very short though - about 15 minutes max. All
other work is "play" from the ground for manners, trailer loading (they just
walk in), voice commands and stuff.
Now I would like to ground drive them together.
There had been a discussion while still on Yahoo about ground driving a new
pair and if they needed to be attached with more than the reins. There
seemed to be ideas going both ways...I lost the drift of this in the list
confusion.
I would love to hear what all of you have done and the pros and cons.

I really want to go slow and sure with these guys and try to get it "right"
the first time...I figure we have 2 years to get prepared to really start
driving:)
Once we are ground driving well as a pair - I will have tons of other
questions.
I'm so glad this list is here.
Thanks!
