Hi List,
I have started my two Morgans as a pair, mother and daughter, mother is 10,
daughter 4. Last winter was first time we hitched them together at the pair
clinic at Blackprong, and they drove like they've always done it. Both
drive single well. I found the younger horse got tired and hung back, so I
felt she needed more single work, and was just not conditioned or mature
enough for the work being asked. Now one year later we have paired them
again, and she is much better, has no problem doing her share, and does not
hang back at all. She is so even tempered and has such a nice rhythm
whether it be walk or trot. On the other hand, mother is hyper, speeds up,
slows down, wants to trot and do all the work, has a poky walk. So I'm
walking only mostly now, just to get her to relax and walk, and not jig
beside her daughter. I don't know if it will work, but I have nothing to
loose. I have another coming 2 year old full brother to the young horse who
is a great match, I will start him in harness this winter, kick him out to
grow up all summer, and put a few miles on him next winter. But I'm
thinking it will be until his 4 year old season before he will be a worker
and mature enough also. Sure takes a long time when you start with babies,
patience is the name of the game. We are competing the 4 year old single,
she's actually coming 5, and doing very well her first two CDE's, even
though we are going slow with her.
I guess my point is, I don't know if mother daughter will ever make a
"pair", but it's fun to drive them and try!!
Debbie
