[drivingpairs] New Pair Fjord



Hi all,
 

Well I have had two really great days.  Finally got to hitch Zeus, my baby
gelding (ok-he's a 5 YO Fjord and close to 1100 pounds but still my baby),
in a pair.  His potential pair partner will be his full brother.  They are
the definition of forward horses.  But we started him with the best mare in
the world TUF Juli.  Zeus thinks she is his true love-he doesn't know why
she's different from the geldings but doesn't care either.  Now she thinks
he's a pest and tries her best to ignore him.  Juli has trained many pair
and three abreast hitches on all kinds of carriages and equipment so we knew
it would go smoothly.  She is almost unflappable and quite willing to remind
the young ones to get to work.  Zeus was happy to be right next to Juli and
was only slightly confused on the first start off when he sort of got pulled
along for a moment.  He also wasn't quite sure what the pole was for about
the first 2-3 seconds when it rubbed his leg but then went right on. He had
to be quick on his turns as Juli can side pass/cross over so quickly that
she can spin a two wheel cart 360 degrees almost in place as a single and
expects him to get out of her way with the pairs carriage pole.  We will try
Zeus on the other side of the pole soon.  Monday we took them down the road
after making sure Zeus remembered his first pairs lesson.   This is so
exciting as it means we have more pair combinations to work with.  All four
Fjords will now drive pairs but some of the combos are not ideal due to gait
patterns and way of going.  We are looking for a sport model Fjord to match
with another gelding.  And dreaming of that 4-in-hand or unicorn in the long
away future.  Pairs driving sure is fun!  This was quite a feat for us as we
have always had a trainer start the pair but we took the chance and did it
ourselves because we had the right mix and a lot of confidence in the
ponies. Monday we even took Zeus for his first drive our down the road a
ways and he was such a gentleman even though it was garbage day and there
were many things to look at.   I hope everyone else is enjoying their pair
driving.   Down here we are having beautiful perfect days interspersed with
monsoons.
