[drivingpairs] My New Unexpected Pair

Hello everyone - Been pretty much a lurker here, but got excited on a new pair
I put together quite unexpectedly. Quick intro before I start - I'm Mary on the
east edge of central Iowa. My husband and I have been driving for 17 years -
starting first with saddlebreds, then drafts, and now drafts to ponies and
everything inbetween, including mules! For the last 2 years I have been driving
a paint/percheron single and looking for a pair. I have been leaning towards
morgans since I grew up with them and have always loved them. That's not quite
what I ended up with, at least for now!
I have had a young pair of shires that I've been letting grow up. I also have a
small clyde filly who is 4 this year. I lost the youngest shire last fall very
quickly and unexpectedly. In January, I saw an ad for a small clyde gelding for
sale. He looked just like my filly and was just as short which is unusual, but
better I think! I wrote, to get more info. I really like him, but couldn't
justify another horse at the moment without selling one of mine. Well, it turns
out she was selling him to buy a shire! So, we did a swap - I never have done
that before, and it was odd that we both had something the other wanted just
right. The gelding was in Michigan, so we met in Shipshewana, Indiana and made
the trade. That was a month ago. Both parties are happy.
So there I have my new pair. 2 bay roan clydesdales - Madison, an 8 year old
gelding and Hannah, a 4 year old filly. They are built and move alike, and I am
anxious for warmer weather (-6 right now!) to begin work with them. They are
about 15.3 hands which is a good height. Not your high end competitors, but a
good pair for me to work with while we get our feet wet in the training CDE's.
I also just got a nice coaching harness for a mid-size (between light horses
and drafts) team that I am very pleased with. I have my used marathon vehicle,
and now just need to look for a presentation type vehicle this spring at the
Waverly Iowa sale the end of March.
Now I'll go back to lurkdom. I really enjoy reading the list, and I'm sure as
we get going this year, you'll be getting some questions from me!
Thanks, Mary Godwin
