[drivingpairs] Marathon Pole

By a leveler bar, are you talking about an evener?
Like on an American carriage, buggy? Singletrees on
each end, with a main beam between both? We are
Midwest, so different terms could mean the same thing.
I have not heard of leveler bar, new method?

You said that your pair is new, January start? Not
sure how much work time you have on them, practicing
as a pair. We tie our evener main beam down for a
while, with a new pair or when putting a new horse
with the trained one. This has horses working off
only the singletrees. Won't matter so much if they
din't start exactly on the same step. Evener is good
with horses that are experienced in pair. They have
had time to learn working together. They both need to
start off evenly, when told walk-on, 95% of the time,
before we untie the evener. Uneven starting will get
them jerking each other, nervous when moving off.
Escalates into the dreaded "see-saw start", where you
get no forward movement. UGLY! Only time and
practice will get smooth starts. Perhaps one of the
pair got pulled unexpectedly and that was part of the
turn problem you had at the crossing. As singles,
they just are not used to being pulled back.

We use an evener as part of our hitching system, on
the marathon vehicle. We think as you do, that it
helps keep both horses working evenly.

Sounds like you had been keeping a close eye on all
the systems. We never tried turning a vehicle over
for repair work! Really would give you a good look at
things. We would just jack it up and slip the block
in, between the axle and spring.
Husband would like to see the pole break for more
information, but said sideways force could have broke
it, being hollow, even without excess metal fatigue.
Metal is his thing.
