[drivingpairs] Leaning away from Pole

I'm having a problem with my pair that maybe someone can give me some
ideas. I have been driving pairs for 3 years so I still have lots to
learn.
My current mini pair consists of a veteran mare and a four year old. The
four year old has had a year of single driving and she's very willing. I
started them working as a pair at an indoor arena in December. They were
there until the beginning of April. They have not had much experience
working as a pair outside the arena (It's literally a few times). Most
of our conditioning since then as been as single.
Our first time out on dirt roads and trails as a pair, the newbie began
to really lean away from the pole. I mean that she's at a angle that
looks like she'd topple over. I couldn't figure out how to straighten
her out. What happens next is my veteran mare starts leaning out on her
side to compensate. Not a very pretty picture.
A friend of mine tried to give me a hand with them a couple of days
later. We tried adjusting the reins and that wasn't it. Finally we
lengthened the traces and they were working terrific together.
That was until this past weekend (next time out as a pair) when we were
at the Lord Stirling CDE. They worked ok in dressage and were terrific
in cones until I got us eliminated. However the next day out on the
marathon my newbie was leaning FAR away from the pole again at times and
working at a steep angle again. It almost seemed like she did it when
the road was uneven (had a hump in the middle) or gravel. She's working
TOO hard when she does this sideways thing and it's not that she's
tired.
I'm perplexed. Any ideas?
Thanks!
